These colonies were controlled by peninsulares, who came from Spain or Portugal. Peninsulares were the highest class. Creoles came next in the colonial heirarchy. These people were decsendants of the Portuguese. Other rulers consisted of caudillos, or leaders that ruled through military force.

The people of South America knew of Simon Bolivar as El Liberator.
